James attended Aberdeen Grammer School 1852-54. He was employed by the North of Scotland Bank at the age of 16, remaining there until his death. He was for 35 years a teller, being promoted to Chief Teller 3 years before his death.

His address at the time of his marriage was Woodside Cottage, Pitfodels (on the Deeside Rd), Banchory, Devenick. His address at his death was The Rectory, Woodhead, Fyvie, but generally his address was recorded as, North of Scotland Bank House, Aberdeen.

James was a Warden of St Andrews Church, King St., Aberdeen, and Diocesan auditor of Aberdeen and Orkney. His private library of ecclesiastical and local history was considered one of the best in Aberdeen. He was a member of the Aberdeen Diocesan Association and lectured on ecclesiastical history. One of his lectures on St Machar's Cathedral was printed in 1897 by the Aberdeen University Press. (Signed copy in the possession of Anthony Turreff - 2010)
