Frances attended Aberdeen Grammar School 1881-1889. Aberdeen University. MA BsC He was enrolled in the faculty of Medicine and obtained 95% in Practical Chemistry (1893) for which he was awarded a bronze medal (in the possession of Anthony Turreff 2010).

Took Holy Orders, Curate Holy Trinity, Ayr 1896 ordained Priest to All Saints Church, Woodhead, Fyvie 8 May 1903 where he remained until 1937 when he retired to Banchory with his sister.

Enlisted in WWI as a driver with the Scottish Mobile Unit of the Red Cross. Served in France 23 May 1918 - 9 Dec 1918. Demobbed 3 Jan 1919. Presented with a scroll of honour by the Red Cross (in the possession of Anthony Turreff 2010)

An Ornithologist and Naturalist he researched and painted birds and wild flowers (discovered a variety of catmint previously unknown). He became ill and sold his collection of stuffed British birds to an Austrian (L300) just before WWII started. His collection of paintings of British flowers in twelve bound volumes were presented to Aberdeen University after his death and joined his painted collection of British birds which had already been presented to the university library. They are considered to be of sufficient importance to be kept in the University strongroom. He received annuities from the McCleish Trust and the Campbell bequest.

He died unmarried at Turbruad, Banchory where he lived with his sister Evelyn.
