bullet  General Notes:

This Turreff family history results from research by Rev Albert Alexander Turreff 1875-1949, and Anthony Turreff.

James was a cloth merchant in Aberdeen and his son Alexander continued the business which had been started by the Blackhall family. The 1862/3 Post Office Directory gives the name of the business as J Blackhall & Co.

bullet  Research Notes:

Anthony Turreff writes 2010:
"There was another James Turreff born 13 march 1774 in Old Machar. It is quite possible that this was the James who married Isabella Jemima Blackhall. There were several Turreffs recorded in Aberdeen (Burgess, birth and death records) from about 1620 onwards, so any one of them could have produced the James who married Isabella.

My grandfather (Albert Turreff) in his researches noted the year of birth of his great grandfather James as 1781 and an address Gateside, Kincardine (Gateshide is next to Banchory Ternan and just over the river is Tilquhillie). It is not known if this address was where he was born, lived or died. No James appears to have been born at this date (1781). He also recorded his year of death as 1806. As this James seems to have been the son of a crofter (unless he was a farmer/landowner) it seems unlikely that he would have married Isabella who was the daughter of an apparently wealthy Aberdeen merchant with a shop in Union Street.

If he is the son of John and Jean, he was born like his sister at Nether Mains of Tillwhilly (Tilquhillie) Kincardineshire as recorded in the old parish records".
