Charles was an ecclesiastical architect, he worked with his father-in-law Richard Carver

Charles was a founder of the Somerset Archaeological Society.
He built and restored many churches in England including Batheaston, Kingweston, East Clevedon, Silverton, North Woolwich, St Luke's Victoria Docks, St John's Frome, Chapel Allerton, St Mary Magdalen Taunton.

Diary of Charles Giles
1848;
March 1. Married at Wilton Church, Taunton and went to London to Adelaide Hotel London Bridge to sleep.
2nd; Staid in London
3rd; Went to Dover to Gun Hotel
4th; Went by steam boat at 3 o'clock in morning to Ostend
5th; Went to hotel to breakfast and wash and on to Bruges by railway
6th; Visited Cathedral. Befpron and chimes Town Hall and beguinage to see the shrine of St Ursula; and slept
7th; To Ghent, spent afternoon in looking at Town Hall, Theatre, streets etc, (carnival going on) went to Antwerp in evening, to hotel on the Place Verte, travelled a M Schalberg, from Mecklenbury, returned from visiting Snd Derby, lost all the luggage at Niechlin, brought new brushes and next morning luggage arrived. Visited Cathedral with Reuben's pictures, also Picture Gallery. Went to Mechlin to sleep

1849, 1850 Jane went to Haverford and Little Haven to stay
Jane went with us to Blue Chester?
1851; Jane went abroad for 4 months with F Thomas
1852; Jane went to stay at Burnham and Woolavington
1853; Jane went to Burnham to live for a time and to Stoke in Autumn
1854; At Stoke and to Burnham while fever with pupils. Fanny Thomas also with Jane at Burnham
1856; Jane to Burnham and after to London from Stoke
[In 1856 the family went to Westbourne Park Villas, Paddington, London to live; in 1859 removed to Westbourne Park Rd; in Feb 1867 to Warley Rd, Brentwood, Essex; in 1874 to Zurich, Switzerland; in 1875 to Lausanne; in 1876 to Vevey; 1879 to Florence]

1858; Went to Southend to stay
1859; went to -do-? And also to Westbourne Park Road to live
1860; We went to Brighton to stay. Mrs Giles came to stay there. Nelly and Edmund with us. The younger ones at home
1861; We went on to Little Haven to stay. Nellie and Willie and Edmund at Taunton and Edgar at Frome (P.A. died) ?? Edmund went with me in winter to Lincolnshire? And Haverford to ?
1862; To Sutton and Lincolnshire. Edmund went to Haverford West to stay in holidays. Great Exhibition year. We went to Sutton to stay by sea with the Giles family
1863; Jane and Nelly to Stourbridge and Malvern. We went to Herne Bay to stay. D Ninnais? Visited us there from Rochester and I saw Canterbury Cathredral
1864; We all went to Porterhead in the Autumn to stay and after Nelly went to Paris and Jane to stay at Willoghby? In the spring of 1864 Jane and I went to Paris and in 1865 I was ill and Jane went to Paris and Switzerland

From the year 1844 to 1848 I saw the country around Taunton including all West Somerset, part of Devon as far down as Plymouth, Dorsetshire in part.
I also spent much time about 1847-8-9 to 53 at Netherby.
From 1848 I was much in Lincolnshire, and 1856-7 in Northants
about 1860 was much in Isle of Wight
about 1862-3 in Norfolk and Essex
1866 went to live in Essex.
1874; Early in January went to London lodgings near Morland Square Bayswater and from there Jane and Nelly went by Thames route and Rhine to Basle and Zurich nearly a fortnight en route. I leaving next day evening for Dover to Calais by night boat and to Bruxelles and Luxembourg, Metz, Strasbourg, Basle and Zurich getting there 3 days before the others. Saw ----. I went to Etuckelby, Khlastole and about the Lakes of Zurich and Wallennst--. Spent the winter at Zurich Bay at Forster.
1875; June 1st went to Fideres. End of Sep, went to Lausanne
1876; went to Vanayz for 3 days and Leekerbad and Nelly and Ellen to Chau? I went to Geneva for a day- (Nelly to England ) Went to Vevey in Sep and I went to England for 5 weeks-
1877; Went to Bex for 10 weeks and to Eryan, Champery and Les Plaus - (Isabella here in spring from India)
1878; Ellen came - we went to Villan and about the country around Montreux and to Leborg for 3 days -
