bullet  General Notes:

James was an Attorney at Law of Bocking Essex. James benefited under his fathers estate being released from a debt of 100pds and interest. He died early and left his two sons imperfectly provided for, and apprenticed them to trades. A large family of their descendants are now thriving at Warnambool Victoria Aust.

George Alston writes to Edward Blair 27 Jan 1807 " About a month since we lost our brother James of Bocking - am sorry to say his . . . . . fnces. . . . . are very indifferent, he has left myself and sisters two boys solely to maintain and put out into the world. Chas the elder now about 15 yrs has had a tolerable education, is only desirious of being placed apprenticed a cabinet maker, he has a great mechanical turn . . . . . I have employed my Brother - in - Law Vanderzee and Mr Bridges to look one a school for him in London, but they have not as yet been able. As you have always been a great friend to our family if it is not to much trouble for you to make some enquires of a steady person who is desirious of taking an apprentice in the Workers Line it will be adding to the many . . . . . we are indebted to you. The youngest about 10 we have sent to the school at Stoke, but we are in hope of getting him into the Blue Coat School".

Cambridge,
Alston Pedigree.
27 Mar. 1898.
Dear Sir,
I send you herewith the pedigree of the descendants of James the eldest son of Samuel Alston of Nayland and Mary his wife and one of James Vanderzee and of Samuel his third son. There was a 4th son William who died in 1839 who was not, so far as I have ever heard, married.
As regards the descendants of Mary who married George Downing I will leave my brother to give you the particulars as I am not sure of the names and dates of birth of all his grandchildren.
I enclose at my brother's request 3 papers of extracts from the registers of Newton in Suffolk, which I made some 50 years ago. They were rather hastily made. I went over to Newton with my sister and we spent the afternoon in making all the extracts we could find relating to Alstons. I could not go again the next day but my sister went and made the 3rd sheet of extracts.
In most cases there was nothing in the registers to identify the people except their names. The exception is in the case of Thomas A. who is described as of Seyme Hall who was no doubt the head of the family in his time.
Faithfully yours,
G. D. LIVEING.

James was aged 44 at his death
