General Notes:
Some researchers consider John Alston [164] bap 20 Jul 1655 s Samuel & Mary may be the ancestor of the Nayland Family
John sonne of Daniell Alstone & Margarett his wife baptised 4 Dec 1664 Edwardstone. IGI & Edwardstone Parish Transcripts Alstoniana.
He is described as John Alston Snr in this tree this ignores the fact that he was described as Jnr at his son's baptism.
That this John was a farmer of Edwardstone and had these four sons etc is based on the old tree below: Alstoniana Pg 371
Pedigree of Samuel Alston the elder of Edwardstone in Suffolk Maltster taken in 1745 (the paper is torn but sufficient remains to decipher . .45 and Samuel the father Will was proved in 1754) and of the whole family from Jno. John Alston (the Ancestor) John John Thomas Jacob
Samuel
Samuel Sarah Ann Mary
Thomas Thomas Grace
Jacob Mary Jacob John Martha Elizabeth Sarah = = d1746 = = = Jno Wiske Ann Alston Stansfield Dounie Tiffin
This tree is inconclusive but cannot be ignored for line of names and Edwardstone roots.
That birth or baptism records of 3 of John's sons have not been knowingly found indicate he might have been living away from Edwardstone at some point, or that they are recorded at the same location as his untraced marriage, probably his wife's home?

Research Notes:
Edwardstone Vicarage, 1st March, 1898. Dear Sir, At last I am able to send you copies of all the Alston baptisms marriages and burials recorded from 1646 to 1760 Our registers only date from 1645 therefore all previous books must have been either lost or destroyed. I had no idea when I first wrote to you that there were so many entries. . . . . I have spent hours and hours in searching the registers and in deciphering the indistinct writing. I shall not forget about the memorial slabs and the "New House" Believe me, Yours faithfully, (Rev.) PAKENHAM WEST.
Edwardstone Vicarage 10 March, 1898. Dear Sir, . . . . . I think it is most probable that the older Registers were destroyed in Cromwell's time. No doubt they contained many interesting records of your ancestors. I enclose copies of inscriptions on memorial slabs, which were removed to the Lady Chapel about the year 1878 ; formerly they lay in the nave and side aisle but they are less likely to be damaged in their present position. With regard to the New House I have made many enquiries. It was not Edwardstone Hall because the Brands occupied that house and it is mentioned on their tombs in the Church. Nor the Grove which was a large house built last century by Colonel Waring during the lifetime of an old parishioner's (aged 85) grandfather and pulled down about 70 years ago by Richard Waring. (It was in fact the Grove ELF 2001) Nor the Lodge which is a small modern house so that I have come to the conclusion that the New House was either Edwardstone House or a smaller house about 500 yards nearer to Boxford. May yet be able to find out which of these was built by Isaac Alston. Believe me, yours faithfully, (Rev.) PAKENHAM WEST. Alstoniana Pg 376/7
Comments on John Alston [4025] son of Daniel & Margaret: That John's parents are Samuel and Mary was suggested by Dr E L Fenn in 1898 but not accepted by Cresswell, or E L Fenn in 2001 who conjectures that the biblical christian names are more likely to have come down from Daniel and Margaret and Martha was used for a two daughters by son Jacob and a daughter by son Samuel.
John sonne of Daniell Alstone & Margarett his wife baptised 4 Dec 1664 Edwardstone. IGI & Edwardstone Parish Transcripts Alstoniana.
John is described as John Jnr as father to some of his children? Perhaps Jnr in relation to John [164] the cousin to differentiate the John Alston's in that generation, there being only a 9 yr age difference between [4025 & [164] ?
A John Allston was born 1666 Newton IGI no parents detailed but a wife shown Elizabeth Harris.

The Henry Corry Papers (1951) from Edwardstone Hall were removed from the Bury RO some years ago, and the researcher (E L Fenn 2011) has not been able to access them. It is felt that they may throw some light on the correct pedigree of John Alston [164] and his family
Shirley Taylor of Rogers Farm writes 2004: after researching Suffolk. Essex and Aylesbury Archives and finding very little on the house we feel that they must have a pile of documents Freddie did admit to this when we bought the farm from him We looked in the Aylesbury Archives as we think Lord Howe may have had a connection with Siam Hall (he certainly did with Rogers) and all his documents have been lodged there. If necessary Pat may go back there and do some more research amongst his documents

4. John Alston Snr & Jnr: Bonds for debt & covenant, 24 Aug 1728 Snr & 8 Mar 1729 Snr/Jnr. Agreement between two people to pay a financial penalty if certain conditions or actions are not performed. Features of a bond: Usually written on parchment until c.17th century; usually paper afterwards In two parts first part written in Latin until 1733 deed poll (straight top edge not in form of an indenture) seal Important words and phrases: The person binding himself is called the 'obligor'. The person to whom he is bound is called the 'obligee'. Bonds are always made up of two parts: 1. The 'obligation'. In the obligation, the names of the parties are given, the obligor states that he is bound to the obligee, the penal sum is given, and the date. This part of a bond was in Latin until 1733, except during the Commonwealth period in the mid-seventeenth century when it was in English 2. The 'condition'. This part of a bond gives the details of what the obligor is promising to do. At the end, a clause states that if he does what he promises, the bond will become null and void. If he does not, then it will remain in force and he becomes liable to pay the penal sum. This part of a bond was normally in English, even in the medieval period Early bonds usually had the obligation on one side and the condition on the other side, but by the seventeenth century the two parts were written on the same side, one above the other.
The key words to look out for are: [Latin] Noverint universi per presentes ... teneri et firmiter obligari [English] Know all men by these presents ... am held and firmly bound
There are three common types of bond: 1. Bond for Debt. These bonds secured the repayment of a sum of money. The penal sum was usually twice the sum which was owed. Bonds for debt were often drawn up in connection with a mortgage and were used to strengthen the covenants for repayment in the mortgage deed. Other bonds for debt might refer to the payment of an annuity, or simply a sum of money lent privately between two people. The words to look out for here are: "if the within bounden AB shall pay or cause to be paid ... the sum of ... with lawful interest..."
2. Bond for Performance of Covenants. These bonds were connected with another deed drawn up on the same date, and were used to make sure that the covenants referred to in the deed were kept to - for instance, building a house to a particular specification, or producing title deeds on request. The covenants themselves are not repeated in the bond, so the deed needs to be present in order to make sense of this type of bond. The operative words are: "if the within bounded AB shall keep and perform the several covenants ..."
3. Bond for Quiet Possession. These bonds were also connected with other deeds, especially conveyances or leases. They strengthened the warranty clause in the deed to make sure that the new owner or tenant was not subjected to any disturbance. The operative words here are: "if the within bounden AB shall have and peaceably enjoy..."
