Robert Molesworth belongs to an ancient family traced back to the 13thc in Scotland.
He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland . He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1679. He was Envoy to Denmark between 1689 and 1692. On 7 May 1689 he was attainted by King James II's Irish Parliament as a Williamite. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Camelford between 1695 and 1698. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dublin [Ireland] between 1695 and 1699. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] between 1702 and 1713. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Swords [Ireland] between 1703 and 1714. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Lostwithiel from 1705 to 1706. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for East Retford between 1706 and 1708. He was Commissioner of Trade and Plantations from 1714 to 1715. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1715. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Michael between 1715 and 1722. He was created 1st Viscount Molesworth of Swords, co. Dublin [Ireland] on 16 July 1716. He was created 1st Lord Molesworth, Baron of Philipstown, in King's County [Ireland] on 16 July 1716. He had seven other children.

However other records indicate they may have had issue 19 children, many of whom died in infancy.

The 1st Viscount died in Dublin on 22 May 1725 at the age of sixty-nine and was buried in Swords. His widow, Letitia, died "of a great cold" on St Patrick's Day 1729 and was buried privately in St. Audoen's Church Dublin. Their eldest son, John, succeeded as 2nd Viscount Molesworth in 1725. John, in turn, was succeeded by his younger brother Richard a year later in 1726.
