Sydney Sussex College Cambridge, B.A. 1712: M.A.1716 Fellow 1727; Rector of St Michael, Mile End for 56 years, from his fathers death, 28 March 1720; appointed Rector of St Mary Magdalene, Colchester, and Master of King James Hospital by Thomas, Earl of Macclesfield, Lord Chancellor, 1 September 1721, and held these offices till he was succeeded by his son John in 1773; patron of the living of Alpheton. He inherited The White House Estate Witnesham, from his grandfather Williams Smythies 1715. He was admitted to the Freedom of Colchester 9 September 1728.
Will dated 6 July 1774, proved PCC 28 January 1777 by Francis Smythies his youngest son.
