John was educated B.A. 1756, M.A. 1759, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, Rector of Arlesford near Colchester; succeeded his father as a rector of St Mary Magdalene and the King James Hospital, Colchester, 1773; Rector of Alpheton SFK, in the gift of his own family, 1806, his elder brother Humphrey having died that year; also Rector of St Nicholas Colchester, for some years.

John married Elizabeth LONGCROFT [21436] [MRIN: 7710], daughter of Robert LONGCROFT of Fratton HAM [21437] and Elizabeth BEARCROFT [21905], in Dec 1777. (Elizabeth LONGCROFT [21436] was born in 1745 in Fratton HAM and died on 30 Oct 1816 in Colchester ESS.)
