Francis contracted typhoid while attending a daughter of Lord Lyttleton suffering from that malady.
Mrs Gladstone (wife of William Gladstone PM) wrote the following letter of condolence to his widow.
21 Carlton Terrace
April 21, 1875.
Dear Mrs Giles,
At such a moment I dare not intrude much, but I must tell you from myself and Mr Gladstone that our hearts bleed for you. We have known your husband for so many years and valued him, and the remembrance of him is mixed up with such gratitude, I may say affection, in my mind that I could not be silent to you. May God in his mercy support and comfort you in this awful trial. May the remembrance of your husband's goodness help you all, his never failing kindness, his unselfish conduct, constant in his duty, ever at his post; he died bravely, and long will be remembered with gratitude. All this will comfort you, for you will be able to think of him beloved, and at peace and rest. I cannot tell you how much I want to know details of his illness, perhaps some of your family will write to me. We trust he did not suffer much, and that he had all the tender nursing he deserved have, and which he so often gave to others.
God bless you all,
yours sincerely
Catherine Gladstone.
