Assault on an Officer.
At the Scarborough Police Court, on Wednesday, Thomas G Champly, Sadler, St Thomas Street, was charged with assaulting Andrew Richard Nugee, a Captain in the York and Lancaster Regiment. Mr Nugee said that on Saturday last he called at the defendants shop for a strap that he had left there to be stitched. He saw defendant, who stated that in stitching the strap he had broken the spring, and would charge him for a new one. Witness took hold of the strap, and then the defendant tried to wrest it from him and while his right arm was under the defendants it was cut by some sharp instrument. Dr J W Taylor said that complainant came to him about 1 o'clock on Saturday last, and had a wound about three quarters of an inch in length on his wrist. Witness stitched it and bandaged it. He was of opinion that it had been done by some sharp instrument. Defendant denied having used the knife. The wound was made with his thumbnail. The only time you use a knife was when he cut the spring of. Thomas Ripley, joiner, said he was passing the defendants shop and saw him struggling with the complainant. When witness went into the shop he saw that the complainant was cut on the wrist. He also saw the defendant cut the spring off with a knife. The bench inflicted a fine of £1 including costs.
