Nugee - Richards. On the 8th inst, at Farlington, the Rev Andrew Nugee, Rector of Widley cum Wymering, to Elizabeth Wroughton, eldest daughter of the Rev E T Richards, Rector of Farlington. Ref: Hampshire Telegraph 12 August 1854
Elizabeth and Andrew Nugee's wedding excited a great deal of curiosity and a large crowd, it was rumoured that the reason was that the ceremony was to be conducted in a "semi-Popish" manner. A report in the Daily News of September 5, 1854 noted that the decorations included a cross of no small dimensions over the Rectory gate and there was much kneeling and bowing and that the entire service was sung rather than read and that the alms were collected in scarlet bags trimmed with gold lace exactly like those used in Romish churches on the Continent writing "this singular affair was far more like a scene in a play than a religious ceremony"
Elizabeth's delicate wedding wreath of artificial orange blossom, made from dyed feathers and silk ribbon, and her dainty wedding slippers of silk satin from Paris are now held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. They were donated, along with other items associated with the Nugee-Richards wedding, by Elizabeth's great grandson, Edward George Nugee. Ref: The Longcrofts by James Phillips-Evans.
Cosham. On Tuesday last the children of the National School in this place were regaled with their annual treat of tea, cake, etc., provided for them by the liberality of Mrs Andrew Nugee, widow of the late respected Rector, whose recent decease has cast a gloom over this place, and caused the postponement of the proceedings until now, but who in his last moments, begged that the children should not be forgotten . . . . .
