Margaret met her husband John when they were both staying with Margaret's Aunt Muriel at Lifton Park in Devon, where John had lived for some time as a child with his widowed mother

Weddings.
A wedding of considerable interest was solemnised at St Mary's Church, Timaru, when Margaret, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy, was married to John, only son of Mrs Bendyshe, of Cambridgeshire, England. The Rev J Hay officiated, assisted by the Rev H W Monaghan. The church was beautifully decorated. The bridal frock was of patterned French lace in thistle down white, over cream ninon. The sleeves were long, the long skirt fell unevenly, and a train of lace fell from the waist. A Russian coronet had diamante trimming and the tulle veil was caught with real orange blossoms. A lovely bouquet of Mount Cook lilies was carried. Miss Elizabeth Elworthy and Mrs Josephine Elworthy, sisters of the bride, were in frocks of delphinium blue spotted muslin over satin of the same shade. Big shady crinoline hats of the same soft blue, with bows of ring velvet drooping over the brims, were worn, and they carried bouquets of sweet peas in pastels shades. Miss Pamela Orbell and Miss Angela Rhodes were in crisp delphinium blue spotted muslin, worn over slips of blue satin. The bodices were tight and sleeveless, and the skirts were entirely composed of frills. Bandeaux of green leaves, with a small forget-me-not posy on either side, encircled their heads, and they carried Victorian posys of pastel tinted flowers Mr Harrold Fenn was the best man, and Mr Paddy Boyle groomsman. The reception was held at "Craigmore" where marquees on the lawn housed the big assemblage of guests New Zealand foliage was used for decorative purposes. Mrs Elworthy wore a handsome gown of silk lace over silver grey georgette the bodice having a cape effect and long white sleeves. Her hat was of a black lace with floral relief, and she carried a bouquet of roses. Mrs Bendyshe, mother of the bridegroom, was in black silk lace draped from the shoulder, and black hat; she carried a bouquet of deep pink roses. Mrs Elworthy (grandmother) was in black silk lace with coatee effect, a white point lace scarf, and hat of black lace. Her bouquet was of crimson roses. Later, when Capt and Mrs Bendyshe left on their tour, the bride was wearing powder blue (faintly checked) under a coat of piccadore, a large bangkok hat caught with a brooch of brilliants, and a beautiful beige fox fur. Guests were present from all parts of New Zealand.
