Edward Blair writes concerning Horkesley Park, to George Alston 25th of June 1804.
. . . . . I called at Lincolns Inn for the particulars of Horkesley Park, but at that time none were printed, and the manuscript they shewed me was very imperfect, as it did not specify the particulars of all the rents. The sum total at that time demanded was 17,500 guineas for 300 acres of land and two small manors: the price for the Mansion and 51 acres, was only 4000 guineas; but including the manor of Nayland L6500. If Sir William's trustees are staggered at the price, who in this neighbourhood can compete with him?
Yours etc etc.
E Blair.

Notes on Some Occupants.of Bear-House (formerly called Stourbank)
Although the main part of the house is reputed to have been built in 1483 and the names of the owners are known from October 1688 onwards, the house was frequently let to tenants. The present notes relate only to people who actually lived there. Many of the heads of household listed were members of the medical profession. Some are described as surgeons, others as general practitioners. An apprentice surgeon, after serving his time, could practice in the late 18th and early 19th centuries without further qualification if he could find patients to consult and pay him, which was probably best done as an assistant to an established doctor. Qualifications to practice included a University M.D. (obtained by thesis) and after 1815, the Apothecaries' Licence by examination, and later still the M.R.C.S., but there was no registration of these qualifications until 1858.
Rohert Leaver and Paul Sidey in 1728 were tenants of Peter Parmenter, blacksmith, of Great Cornard. Robert Leaver was a woolcomber. Jeremy Sidey who died around 1713/14 and was possibly Paul.Sidey's father, was a tanner.
Charles Morris and Robert Leaver were the tenants in 1730. Charles Morris was a cordwainer (leatherworker and shoemaker)..
Thames [Budd?] and Mr White were the ratepayers in 1748. They would have been tenants of George Holton, butcher, who owned the property at that time. Mr White was the Rev.John White, Incumbent of St James Church, Nayland, from 1713 until his death.on 24th.Oct 1755 aged 71. His wife Sarah, nee Paris, died 20th June 1753. Their son John White, surgeon (i.e. general practitioner),who lived there with them, died aged 25 on 23rd March 1755.
William Fairclough surgeon.1768/90, Was living at Stourbank in November 1768, when the Poor Rate was payable at 12d in the £ and he had to pay 8s in respect of his. house and stables, plus a further 6d on his personal estate. He .appears to have rented the property from Mrs Margaret Holton, George Holton's widow. From parish accounts in Nayland Town Books: 13th October 1780 "Pd Mr Fairclough's (surgeon.) bill for old Dan King". In August 1782 William Fairclough subscribed £10-108-0d .towards building a Man-of-War of 74 guns. He died 14th Jan 1790.
Orbell Fairclough, surgeon. 1791. Third son of the above.
Thomas Churchman Harrold, surgeon. 1793/1811 or later. Born 1765. On 19th May 1779, i.e. at age 14 ? , was apprenticed to Aldous Arnold, surgeon, Lowestoft, for a period of 7 years at a premium of £52. On 5th January 1798 Robert Rose was apprenticed to him in Nayland for a period of 5 years at a premium of £140. Was living in Bear Street in 1811.
[Sources: PJ & RV Wallis, 18th Century Medics, Newcastle-upon-Tyne Project for Historical Bibliography, 1988; Universal Directory of British Trade and Commerce 1793-98, where he is listed as a surgeon in Nayland; 1811 Census.]
Edward Liveing, surgeon, Thomas Churchman Harrold's nephew. 1835/43. Almost certainly followed his uncle as tenant. He was already living there in 1835
William Sinnott of Clerkenwell
Thomas Harrold Fenn 1835 - 1870 surgeon lived at Stourbank (now Bear House, 19 Bear St) which he bought from a William Sinnott of Clerkenwell in 1835. Stourbank in 1839 comprised a house and garden of 3/4 of an acre, plus an orchard opposite of 2/3 of an acre.

1870-1873 Physician sold Stourbank in 1873 and went to Richmond Surrey
