Alexander attended Aberdeen Grammer School 1872-76, he then joined the North Bank of Scotland. He worked first in Aberdeen then in London, living at one time at 9 Christchurch Rd Hampstead and later 31 Rosslyn Hill Hampstead. He returned to Aberdeen to witness his fathers death certificate.

He apparently travelled a great deal once retired. He is recorded as an incoming UK arrival at London from Bombay 15 Apr 1925 on ss Narkunda; at Southampton from Algiers 19th April 1929 on ss Pieter Corneliszom; at Southampton from West Indies 10 Mar 1930 on ss Arandora Star; and at Southampton from Genoa and Algeria 9 Apr 1935 on ss Christian Huygens. He was in each case described as retired and living at 9 Christchurch Rd, Hampstead.

Alexander is not know to have married, he left an estate of L15,878, as published in The Times 23 Nov 1938. He left legacies to many charities including, Aberdeen Asylum for the Blind, Gordon Highlanders Institute, West Aberdeen Coal Fund, Morningfield Hospital for Incurables, London Bank Clerks Orphanage, L1200 to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Aberdeen. No family legacies are noted.
