General Notes:
Sir John was constituted by Edward IV. Constable of the Castle of Norwich. Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, Treasurer of the King's Household, Captain General of all the King's Forces at Sea, Deputy Governor of Calais and the Marches adjacent, created Earl Marshal of England and Duke of Norfolk 1483, his son and heir Thomas Howard being created Earl of Surrey at the same time. He was K.G. and Lord High Admiral of England, Ireland and Aquitaine for life, Being with Richard III. at Bosworth Field he fell in leading the van of that Prince's army. His Grace was warned to refrain from attending Richard that day and the night before the battle the historic distich was set upon his gate "Jockey of Norfolk, be not too bold For Dickon thy master is bought and sold."
