John Alston died unmarried insane from a blow with a quarter staff, but the researcher (E L Fenn) believes it to have been the fate of Edward his brother.
John describes himself in his Will as: being sick and weake in body . . . . . but of good and sound mind and memory, whereas we know William to have been insane.

WILL of JOHN ALSTON OF LONDON
26 Jan 1704
In the name of God in Amen. I John Alston of London gent being sick and weake in body but praised be God of good and sound mind and memory doe make this my last will and testament my soul I render to Almighty God my creator hoping for remission of my sins through his mercy and the infinite merritts of my ever blessed saviour Jesus Christ and my body I commit to decent burial, and as to the temporall estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me , I dispose hereof in manner following to wit I give and bequeath to my loving cousin John Alston of Pavenham in the County of Bedford a Note on Bill of the Bank of England of one hundred pounds which I have in my custody. And I give to Mrs Dorothy Duncombe widow all the goods and chattels belonging to me which are in my dwelling house at Edmonton. And I will that what is due from me to her shall be paid I also give and bequeath to Ralph Story in the parish of St Dunstan in the West London in respect of his and his wive's great and constant care of and attentances on me in my sicknesses One other Note or Bill of the Bank of England of one hundred pounds which I also have in my custody and I likewise give to him all my goods and chattels which are in his dwelling house wherein I lately lodged. And I give to Matthew Crutchfield? a gold ring of the value of twenty shillings. And I doe also hereby give and bequeath to Mr John Plaxton in Essex Court in the Middle Temple, London ten Guineas and also a pair of pistols which are in the trunk in the closet of the chamber where I now lodge. And as to all the residue of my personal estate remaining after payment of what I have above given or bequeathed and the debts I owe and the Chargers of my funeral. I doe hereby will and direct that such part thereof as is any way lent out at interest shall be soe continued.
And that the residue thereof shall also be put out at interest and such interest aforesaid to be paid yearly to my loving brother Edward Alston Esq for his own use and after his decease I give all the said residue of my personal estate unto the children of my said cousin John Alston and I do thereby revoke all former Wills by me made and do hereby make the said John Plaxton sole executor of this my last will and Testament in witness here of I have here unto set my hand and Seale this 6 and 20th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and four
