Clayton Station was owned by Lancelot Walker of Mt. Four Peaks. In 1881 he sold Clayton to Hamilton and Four Peaks to Tripp. Clayton Station was bought by Hugh Montgomerie Hamilton, a New South Wales squatter, (a barrister from Sydney) in June 1881 and the house was added to immediately. When the Hamilton's bought the station in 1881 they took delivery of about 19,000 sheep, including 7,600 ewes. (They afterwards carried up to 30,000 sheep.) They took over Walker's head shepherd, a man named Davidson, who stayed till 1884 when he left to manage Meikleburn. The Hamilton family held Clayton until 1919 when Hugh's son George sold it. Early owners had been unlucky in running Clayton. However the Hamilton's, with their background of experience and money, were able to turn it into a success. The Clayton diaries start in 1877 describe the day-to-day events on the station and the work of the men. They do not include much information about domestic or social life.
The Clayton Station homestead is listed as a category 1 and the Clayton Stables, Lot 1 DP 24411 RS 14214. Blks III IV VII VIII Opuha SD, is listed with Heritage NZ as a category 2 so is the ruins of the Ashwick Stables. 2013 snow tips tips Tenure review public access catchment flows
In 1930 George Hamilton, who managed Clayton most of the time it belonged to his family, still lived at Rozelle, his house near Orari. George Innes Hamilton born 1st Augt. 1856 died in 13 Aug.1945, aged 89y and was buried at Geraldine.
