Research Notes:
CAPTAIN HOLLAND'S DEATH: The following account of the death of Captain Charles Holland, R.F.C., who was accidentally- killed by a fall in his machine from a height of 700 feet, will be of interest to people in the Fairlie district (NZ), the deceased having been for two or three years in the employ of Mr G. I. Hamilton, of Clayton Station. Captain Holland, who was 31 last June, was a brilliant airman, and had been engaged in teaching beginners for two or three months. He was awarded the Military Cross in June 1917 for a daring flight over the German lines, and received the trophy at the hands of' the King. When the war broke out he was working for the West's Nyassaland Estates Company in Northern Rhodesia. On their disbandment he saw service with the Belgians in the Congo, and after a long trek returned to England joining the Royal Flying Corps he was sent to the Curragh, and thence to France, where he was shot through the thigh and had two fingers smashed in an aerial engagement. Ho was an all round athlete, and at the last sports meeting which he attended at Horsham carried off the two mile and one mile open cycle races, besides other trophies. Deceased was a nephew of Mrs G. I. Hamilton*. Ref: Timaru Herald, Volume CVII, Issue 16525, 23 April 1918, Page 5 (New Zealand)
