Frances had a brother in Southsea Portsmouth where the family stayed at times when home from Argentina

The 1891 Census reveals that Frances is back in England with her family as her marriage had broken down. The life of a rancher's wife in Argentina had never really suited her, and the thought that her sons would have to perform military service in Argentina was unacceptable to her, she never returned to the country in spite of indicating she would to her husband when he returned in 1890.
Frederick returning to England in 1891 found his wife living with a lover under an assumed name in Devon, he unsuccessfully brought a case against the man then successfully petitioned for divorce. It is said that Frances had, before she web Frederick, given her heart to an aristocratic young army officer who she was unable to marry because of her family's rank.
Her lover John Chirton Owen, later her husband was 17 years younger than Frances. They had met in 1884 when Owen was employed by Frederick on his ranch in Argentina, he managed the property when the family returned to England in 1890. Owen returned to England shortly after Frederick returned to Argentina without Frances.

Frances married Frederick Kinnersley SMYTHIES [22372] [MRIN: 8037], son of Rev Edward SMYTHIES [21464] and Elizabeth March PHILLIPS [21465], on 30 Apr 1873 in Christ Church Doncaster YKS. (Frederick Kinnersley SMYTHIES [22372] was born on 21 Jun 1849 in Sutton Bonington NTT and died in Mar 1896 in Berwick Bassett WIL.)
