General Notes:
A PIONEER PASSES MRS. E. M. O'CONNOR Another link with the past has been severed by the cieath on Wednesday of Mrs. Ellen Mina* O'Connor, after a long illness, at her home in Aumoe Avenue, Kohimarama. A granddaughter of the great colonial reformer and coloniser, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, Mrs. O'Connor was born in Christchurch in 1866. Her father, Mr. Edward Jerningham Wakefield, one of the pioneer Canterbury settlers, came to New Zealand in 1839 on the brig Tory. After some years in this country he wrote "Adventure in New Zealand," an account in two volumes of the very early days in the Dominion. In 1854 he was elected to the first New Zealand Parliament and 17 years later was member for Christchurch East electorate. In 1890 Mrs. O'Connor was married to the late Mr. Charles O'Connor, well known in horse racing circles. Their only son was killed in the Great War and Mr. O'Connor died about nine years ago. Mrs. O'Connor is survived by two daughters and her sister, Miss L. P. Wakefield, of Auckland. Ref: Evening Post, Volume CXXXI, Issue 3, 4 January 1941, Page 10 * Reported name incorrect
