bullet  General Notes:

Charles was the only surviving son of the Rev Samuel Marsden and the second to be christened the same name. After he married they lived at Mamre, built by his father on South Creek, they became its first residents.

This property had been cultivated by his father for many years since being granted in 1804. Sheep breeding and experimentation was the most notable enterprise for which the area is today remembered. There was also a large orchard which produced lush fruits of all kinds and grain grew luxuriantly in the rich fertile ground. Apart from Marsden's large army of government assigned convicts a tribe of friendly Aboriginal camped across the creek, a few hundred yards from the homestead.

Charles was left this property at his fathers death in 1838, unfortunately he was a man of expensive tastes and unrealistic expectations and in November 1842 he was declared bankrupt losing Mamre and other property to his creditors.

It appears that Charles was never discharged from his bankruptcy and died intestate, spending his declining years on the small estate of 180 acres, known as Shrivenham, originally part of Mamre brought back by his mother-in-law.

Administration of his estate was granted 15 February 1878 to Charles Mason Marsden, it being valued at under L50.
