The surname was originally 'de Marillac St Julien', but when they moved from France to Germany/Austria, they changed to 'von'.
On arriving on South African shores, they decided to go back to the French spelling, correctly the surname is "de Marillac St Julien".
There is a partial history of the de Marillac family on the 'Ermen' family website, as Godfrey Ermen was Friedrich Engels business partner in Manchester, UK.
