In 1909 Henry entered the Royal Naval College Osbourne in the same term as the future King George VI. (R N training).
1913-15 Mishipman on the Monarch, serving in the Grand Fleet in 1914-1915. Selected for airship training whilst still a midshipman.
1916-18 Subsequently promoted to flight sub-lieutenant (18 Apr 1916 - The London Gazette) and then lieutenant in naval airships working from Anglesey, Howden, Capel and Pulham for the duration of the war.
1919 On the formation of the RAF he was graded as captain (dirigibles) and granted a permanent commission as flight lieutenant in 1919.
1921-24 Served in Egypt and Iraq.
1924-34 Served with home bomber squadron in command of an air station, also on the staff of RAF College.

1929 Promoted to squadron leader.

1934-36 Navigation staff officer at the headquarters of Far East Command.

1937 Appointed Senior Personnel Staff Officer, No 16 (Reconnaissance) Group, Lee-on-Solent. (

1941 Promoted to group captain on June 1.

1941 Died on active service on Thornley Island and buried at St Nicholas churchyard, West Thorney, Sussex (plot 1, row A, grave 5) Group Captain stationed at RAF Thorney Island. Aged 45.
Commonwealth War Graves Commission record names parents, including mother's maiden name, also his wife, including her maiden name. Funeral was at 2 pm at West Thorney Parish Church on Friday 3 October 1941.
Left a widow and two sons, served for 33 years in the Navy, RNAS and RAF.

SCROGGS - In September 1941, on active service, Group Captain Henry Sydney SCROGGS ("Scroggy"), aged 45, deeply loved and loving husband of Peggy (nee POWELL), dear father of Timothy and Peter, and beloved only son of Commander H. C. SCROGGS, R.N., retired, and of Mrs SCROGGS, The Glen, Colden Common, Winchester. Funeral at West Thorney Parish Church at 2 pm. to-day (Friday).
