bullet  General Notes:

Lionel served in WW I, in the 4th Pioneers which was a Battalion made up of the remnants of other battalions that had been almost wiped out, they were banded together to form the 4th Pioneer. He refused to talk about his war service. On leave from France, he would visit England.
After the war, he went as a stockman on "Jingeree" Station, near Proston, Queensland. He married the cook Elizabeth Zanke. Life was not easy during the post war years, he was a Jack of all Trades, and on the roads near Murgon when their daughter Marion was born ; and on the Kyogle railway line, when his son was born.
They share-farmed near Woodford, Kilcoy Line, as he hoped to own his own farm later on, but moved to another farm nearby after a year or two, as the share-farm was not paying. The family moved to Monto in 1935 where Lionel was employed with the Forestry Department, rising to the position as Ganger.
In 1942 Lionel joined the Army but he was over the age limit for the A.L.F. so joined the Garrison Battalion which escorted P.O.W. trains and acted as guards on camps. They moved to Brisbane at this time. After the end of world War II, Lionel was employed by the Defence Depart. until he retired at the age of 65 yrs. They bought a house in Zillmere and he did odd jobs until in 1956 when he died suddenly. Lizzie was devastated.
