Samuel Jnr came out to New Zealand on the Edwin Fox 18 April 1875 shortly before his mother's death, he also had chosen a life in the Army, serving in the US Army Cavalry.

Samuel married in 1875, he was described at that time as a carpenter. He abandoned his family in New Zealand in 1878 leaving for Fiji, he returned to New Zealand in the early 1880s but thereafter all contact was lost with him.
