General Notes:
Dermot Neill Birth Date: Jan-Feb-Mar 1914 Registration Place: Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand Folio Number: 1506
Dermot was a career soldier with the Irish Fusiliers.
Dermot Neill wrote of his family in the 1960's here are some extracts. The earliest Neill that I could trace was one John Neill of Seaford, County Down. He was born in 1789 and died at the ripe old age of 90 and he's buried in Seaford churchyard. Seaford is some ten miles from Newcastle, County Down and about 3 miles from Ballykinlar. John Neill of Seaford was a farmer and he had two marriages and raised a large family and his eldest son, Robert Neill, duly went to Belfast and set up as a merchant. Robert prospered and raised a large Victorian family and he had several sons, of whom Percival Clay Neill my grandfather, Robert Neill and William Godfrey Neill came to New Zealand. Percival first settled in Melbourne, but in 1862 he joined the gold rush to Otago and founded the firm that became Neill and Company. It specialised in supplying groceries, liquor and general merchandise to the early colonists and Percival prospered greatly. He built a grand house, "Chingford", in Dunedin and married Gertrude Emmeline Fyans of Melbourne.
Neill & Co later Wilson Neill was a National entity until the 21st C.
