1. Herbert James Barker: Obituary, 1969, Melbourne Aust.
Navy Veteran has Died.
1 Oct 1969
Mr. Herbert James (Bert) Barker, of Empire St., Footscray, who died at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital last Wednesday after a long illness, served with the Royal Australian Navy In the first world war. A member of the Naval Reserve, he answered the call at the outbreak of war in 1914 and served on HMAS Sydney, which made history when it caught up with the German cruiser Emden off the Cocos Islands and after a fierce engagement, destroyed it. For many months the roving Emden had taken heavy toll of Allied merchant shipping. Later, Mr. Barker, served on other vessels.
The Sydney was one of the naval vessels guarding the first convoy of ships carrying Australian troops overseas in 1914, when after a radio call she was diverted to make combat with the German raider. The war destroyed Bert Barker's football ambitions; as a lad he played with Footscray Juniors, but he remained a lifelong supporter of the Bulldogs. He was a foundation member of FFC Old Players' Association and a top revenue producer for that body. One of his sons, Lou, played for Footscray and Williamstown, where he later coached Williamstown Seconds to two premierships, and later still coached Spotswood (FDFL) to a premiership. Mr. Barker lived all his life in the district, and before his retirement, some years ago was a metal polisher at Newport Railways Workshops.
Mr. Barker was twice married. He had a family of eight (one deceased) by his first wife, who pre-deceased him, and he also leaves five stepsons and two stepdaughters.
The funeral on Monday was to the Western Suburbs Crematorium. Mr Harold Schuldt conducted the ex-servicemen's service.
