FEARS TO INCRIMINATE HIM SELF.
Robert W. A. Vanderzee, who described himself as & gentleman, appeared in Prahran court yesterday to answer a charge of offensive behavior. Plain clothes Constable Holtcn said he went to the Post Office Hotel, Chapel street, on Thursday afternoon and saw accused in the bar. He was under the influence of drink, and was put out by the licensee. Witness followed him, and he called out, 'You dirty mongrel.' Witness advised him to go home, but he replied, 'You are only a ? policeman.' He was then arrested.
Defendant: Were you drinking at the bar ?
Witness (looking appealingly at the bench): Am I compelled to answer that question ? I might incriminate myself. (Laughter.)
Mr. Grant, P.M.: It was only half-past 4. (Renewed laughter.)
Witness: ? Yes. I was drinking.
Defendant said thc bar maid made a remark which he resented, and he told her to mind her own business, he then went to another hotel, but on going back to the Post Office Hotel the girl again started an argument. He had had a few drinks.
A fine of £3, in default two weeks i prisonment, was imposed.
