William was a wealthy hosier with a large manufacturing plant, the Glenmac Works, in Hawick. He was a Quaker and with a business partner William Watson, built the Quaker Chapel in Hawick

In 1826 Messrs Wilson invoiced a consignment of Scottish "tweels" to Locke of London. A clerk mis-read the word as "tweed" The name was allowed to stand and was considered the best description for the particular class of goods produced in the Boarder District.
