Died.
On Sunday last, most deeply lamented, Francis, elder son of the Rev Francis Fortescue KNOTTESFORD, of Stoke by Nayland, in this County, aged 11 years and 10 months.

Francisci Fortescue Knottesford a.m.
Et Mariae uxoris eius
Qui XXIXma die Martii, anno Salutis MDCCCXVIII
Aetatis duodecimo suae
Heu nimium cito! In pace requievit.

(Within these altar rails there lies deposited, in the certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord and God Jesus Christ all that was mortal of [Francis Fortescue] the eldest and most beloved son of Francis Fortescue Knottesford, M.A. [a.m. is believed to be an abbreviation of "atrium Magister".] and his wife Maria who - all too early! - on the 29th March, in the year of our Salvation 1818, and in his twelfth year, fell peacefully asleep. His grieving parents and grandmother have erected this monument.")

St Bees1 February 3, 1816.
Dear Aunt and Cousin, I have something to tell you funny, for as I was playing about the school yard where the boys were sliding, and as I was getting on the hedge I fell into the great ditch on the other side. Aan(sic) if there had not been one of the Servants which were with me I should have not have getting out. Pray is the Papa, Mamma, Grand Mamma, Fanny, Maria, George, Mr and Miss Wilson, and all the poor people quite well. Also I hope you are both well. I like St Bees very much, I shall expect a letter from you as soon as you can, I am quite well
