Nathaniel was on the 10 Sept. 1859, at Simla, appointed by Commission Warrant Assistant Surgeon in the service of the East India Coy. The documents pertaining to this are in the possession of Adrian Hopkins - 2002.

Surgeons on the march to Kandahar
Listed below are the surgeon-officers I have been able to identify who marched with the Kabul-Kandahar Field Force in August 1880 (plus some other medical staff). As well as the Principle Medical Officer, each brigade had a surgeon in charge, as too did the various regiments. THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me NATHANIEL HOPKINS of Rhydian Stoke by Nayland Suffolk Surgeon Major Bombay Army
I hereby appoint my wife Lucy Vanderzee Hopkins my brother Edward Hopkins Surgeon Major of the Army
Medical Department and Edward Liveing Fenn of Richmond Surrey Doctor of Medicine the brother of my said wife EXECUTORS and Trustees of this my will who are hereinafter designated and called my trustees
I give and bequeath all my furniture linen plate jewellry horses carriages and other goods and chattels of every kind in my house or connected therewith to my wife absolutely
As my wife is provided for by settlement I give devise and bequeath to my said trustees all the rest and residue of my real and personal estate of what nature or kind soever Upon trust to sell the same by private contract or public auction or so much thereof as shall be in its nature saleable and deemed prudent to sell and to invest the produce of any such sale or sales in their joint names in any government stock or funds or Indian or Colonial securities or on mortgage or purchase of real estate or chattels real with a term of sixty years to expire from the date of investment or in good Railway or other corporation debenture or preference stock and upon further trust to apply so much of such income as shall be necessary to maintain and educate my children now born or hereafter to be born during their respective minority until they shall respectively arrive at twenty four years then to pay or transfer the share of each as shall arrive at that age but the share of any daughter to be for her sole and separate use independently of any husband and to be settled accordingly
The trustees to give the usual receipts and discharges on resignation or incapacity of a trustee
The surviving trustees or his or her Executor to appoint new trustees and to use all statutable powers for that purpose
I give each of my children a vested interest on their respectively arriving at the age of twenty one Should all my children die childless before having a vested interest then upon trust as to one third of my estate disposable under this my will to my said wife if living and the residue to my brother John his heirs executors and administrators
IN WITNESS whereof I the said testator Nathaniel Hopkins have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand this third day of February one thousand eight hundred and eighty three
