James graduated from Lincoln College Oxford in 1906 then took up articles in his father's Castle Street law practice. At age 38 he abandoned the law and followed in his grandfather's steps by becoming a clergyman. He trained, 1920, at Ridley College Cambridge and was ordained in London, he had various appointments including princible of St Matthew's boys school in Moulmein Burma. Returning to England he served as curate in several parishes until in 1944 he became the 8th vicar of St Peter's Wrecclesham, where he remained until 1953. He retired as Rector of St Margaret Hemmingford Abbots in 1961, to Rottingdean.
James married for the first time, late in life, aged 70.
