Was at School with his brother Julius He was admitted Sizar to St Johns College, Cambridge;Trinity College;Cambridge, on 7th October 1818, and was later Scolar. He Obtained his B.A. in 1822 and became a second Wrangler. In 1823 he was Smith Second Prizeman in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. He was a fellow of the college from 1824 to 1834 and obtained his M.A. in 1826. He took Holy Orders and was ordained Deacon on 5th June 1830 and Priest on 3rd November 1831. He left Cambridge in 1834 and established himself in London;England as an independant preacher and tutor, having doubts on dogma which finally led him to break with the established church. He brought up his nephews James and Charles Samuel Nicol. In 1841 he taught Herbert Edric and Reginald Julius.In 1847 the family trandferred to Birkenhead, and in 1851 Charles decided to emigrate to New Zealand to join his sister Caroline and her husband Judge Valpy, who had gone there shortly before. The family sailed on the 'Maori' on its second Voyage, Landed in Nelson, New Zealand on Christmas day 1851. They settled on Judge Valpu's estates and Charles continued his independant ministry in Otago, New Zealand November 28 1862 Died. At his residence, at the Forbury, on Tuesday, the 25th inst., the Rev. Charles Jeffreys, aged 61 years. The funeral will leave the Forbury, on Friday, the 29th inst., at 12 o'clock noon. Kathleen Virginia b about 1879 Dubedin d 13 August 1854 aged 75 years Edith Mary b d 1 Feb 1890 Dunedin Lived 3 minutes only. On the the 25th ultimo the Rev. Charles Jeffreys delivered the Opening Lecture at the Mechanics' Institution, the subject being " A remarkable lately discovered Experiment for establishing, by means of a Pendulum,* the fact of the Rotation of the Earth about its Axis." The attendance was numerous, many persons coming from a considerable distance to be present. Many were, however, unable to obtain admission.
