Angela Liveing's memories of her father James Alfred Daniel and mother Sheila Vivienne Nicholas.
The father of Grandpa Daniel ( ie James father) was an Anglican priest in Manchester who moved to Northern Ireland, joined the Irish Protestant church and ?married in 1880's in the Armagh area. He died in 1922 of cancer. Grandmother went to live with Uncle Ken (Kenneth Daniel, James' brother). Aunt Helen (presumably Uncle Ken's wife) died in 1936. (Jane Bleakley (nee Daniel?) is their daughter I believe) James (Puggy) Daniel left Northern Ireland and went to Sandhurst. He never had a home after that. Granny Booth was born in 1908 (Sheila was known to Angela's family as Granny Booth), (Legacy website has her birth date as 1909).
In 1939 Angela and her mother visited England to decide on the best school for her to go to. Angela refused point blank the first school offered (was this because they did not play tennis?) and agreed the next, Rookesbury Park School in Wickham which was near (ish) to where her maternal grandparents lived in Lee-on-Solent. Grandparents had custody of Angela
When Angela was sent to go to school, war broke out, and on her arrival they discovered that her school had been evacuated to Haccombe House in Devon. She remained at school, unable to return home, for the duration of the war. (not sure if she ever had any holidays with English relatives, she certainly spoke about several occasions where she was alone in a large dormitory during the holidays, and the occasional visit from relatives). Whilst she was away her parent's marriage started to fall apart (I believe) and by the time she was 13, her parents divorced. Granny and Grandpa Daniel went to Lucknow in 1942. He was in the 2'd Battalion Welsh Regiment in Bombay (as it was called then) he left Liverpool in September 1939, was promoted and posted to Lucknow until October 1944, when he returned to Liverpool on leave. After this he went to West Africa in 1945, to The Gold Coast (as it was called then) .
Sheila, Angela's mother, returned to Liverpool from Bombay l' class aboard the SS Strathmore on 23' October 1944. Her address in England was given on the passenger list as c/o Miss Glenday, Haccombe, Nr. Newton Abbot, Sth. Devon. Miss Glenday was the person who founded Rookesbury Park School.
Angela recalls that Sheila lived with Jack Broome's mother (Jack Broome married Sheila's sister Sybil) in Central London. Whilst there she worked every day packing Red Cross parcels for prisoners of war (POWs). Christmas 1944 Angela went to stay with Jack (Broome) and Sybil \emdash Simon and Judy were their children. Katherine Broome married Simon, and has a son Nicholas who sees Judy. Simon died in his 40's. Christmas 1945 Sheila and Angela spent at Lynton in Devon. Teddy (known as Uncle Teddy) her partner was born in 1904, went to Malvem, and went to Ceylon (as it was called then) in 1924 or 6, ?doing tea. On 17th November 1928 he left London on the Merkara bound for Calcutta (as it was called then). The ship's passenger list records him as having a last address in England as 23, Lancaster Gate W2, and a profession of Tea Gdn. Asst. According to Angela, he was doing publishing. Whilst in Calcutta he won lots of cups in amateur horse racing at Tollygunge, about 30 cups. He bought his horses in Australia. Thence he went to Lucknow in ?1939 and was manager of the Jockey club there. He was ADC to the General in Lucknow from about 1941-4.

Just after the war Angela met Teddy (Edward Kipling Booth) who was to become her mother's future partner, in 'someone's' flat.

Granny and Grandpa Daniel divorced in 1946. Sheila went back to India in August 1946 at which point Puggy came back from West Africa.

After being in West Africa Grandpa Daniel came back to England and lived in the Mess at Aldershot (?) until his retirement in 1949/50. Stayed in London and became a greyhound racing steward at White City (?) and went from thence to Wilmslow where he was sent in order to become a steward at Belle Vue in around 1948. Angela went into the ?army 1950 and her father remarried about then. Probably lasted 18 months. Went to Blundellsands , wife lived there, 1950 ish and Knutsford 1952 after splitting up from his wife.

He lived in a B&B, called Heatherfield Guest House in Knutsford. His cousins were in Knutsford, English, something to do with the Daniels. Angela did not have a home between 1939 (when she travelled from India where her father was stationed and her parents lived) and when she got married, either because she was at school or later as she lived with her father. He had some form of prostate issue. He was in Withington or maybe Wythenshawe hospital (MSL probably Withington as it had a history of serving the military and served South Manchester). Some Colonel visited him, and put in motion moving him to the military hospital at Millbank (probably the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank, London). He went into the senior Officer's ward. Ken Hutchi(n)son had lived in Heatherfield and used to visit him (in Millbank ?) and write letters to Angela for him. He was in the hospital at the same time as John Liveing when he was diagnosed with diabetes, he spent 3 weeks there. (not sure whether this means John or James).

He died in Millbank in July 1959.

Granny and Grandpa (John) Nicholas lived at Delamara from 1932 until he died in 1942.
After Grandpa Nicholas died, Granny, Hilary and Beryl (other children called John, Peter, Hyacinth, Sybil, Sheila, Rodney) went to live in a bungalow down the road from Delamara in ? Lee on Solent. Hilary married someone with the surname Sketchley and went to Ceylon, Angela said the marriage did not last. Hyacinth married the butcher's son who committed suicide (not sure who exactly committed suicide). They had three children Michael, (did he end up in an orphanage?) Valerie, ? . (Someone's)Dad or grandfather gambled away the estate.

Granny and Uncle Teddy came back to London from Calcutta aboard the SS Janrajendra and arrived 21 September 1953. His profession was retired Gent., and hers Housewife. All the listed passengers travelled first class and she was the only woman. Their address in London was given as 64 Bayswater Rd.

For conspicuous gallantry during an attack. He organised a patrol and advanced covering party, who established a
bridgehead and covered the crossing over the river of the remainder of the battalion, enabling them to start the attack punctually. He subsequently dealt with some enemy machine guns, and brought on the rear companies to the final objective. It was largely due to his personal influence and power of command that the advance was so successful.
