Frederick was always known as Don
His brother Colin remembers him: Don served in the Royal Navy in the Second World War in India and Burma, having lied about his age so that he could sign up. After the War he lived with his wife who was alway known as Spud, and their two daughters, Hazel and Karen in Throop, a picturesque country village a mile or so from Luckham Road. Their home was "The Shack," which dates back to the 15th century and is the oldest dwelling in Throop. Behind the home was an old two-story barn and vegetable gardens, and at the rear of the property were two pig sties. Don had a one-speed bike with a big metal tray attached to the handlebars, and he would pedal his bike around to local "green-grocers" (vegetable shops) and restaurants to collect their scraps, which he would then cook with grain to feed the pigs. I can still remember the smell of the cooking "mash and the sows as they lay on their sides, each with ten or more piglets fighting for space as they suckled. Don stayed in Throop when we left for New Zealand, but joined us there in 1962 with Spud, Hazel and Karen. Don and his family did well in New Zealand, and Don retired after serving for many years as the "grounds manager" for the Auckland International Airport at Mangere. Colin Sellwood 2018
