COOPER'S CREEK AMATEUR TURF CLUB MEETING. The first annual meeting of the Cooper's Creek Amateur Turf Club was held on the Old Course at Innamincka on December 26 and 27, in the presence of a large concourse of people. Rain set in, in the early part of the first day's racing, but fortunately cleared off towards the afternoon, and the course was perfect. In every way the races were a great success, Mr. E. T. Hartley carried out the duties of Secretary an able manner. Mr. F. H. Peate acted as Judge and Mr. John Richardson as Starter, and both gave every satisfaction, Romeo and Rocket ran a dead heat in the Jumbo Stakes for first place. A sad fatal accident occurred in the Hurdle Race. Mr. Edward J. Hampton*, aged twenty three, of Ashby Vale, who was riding Starlight, came to grief over the first hurdle, the horse rolling on top of him, causing internal haemorrhage to set in, and also concussion of the brain. The unfortunate gentleman remained unconscious up to the time of his death, which occurred next day, being just twenty-four hours, after the accident. An inquest was .considered unnecessary, and the funeral the following day was attended by a large number of people including all the jockeys in riding colours. The calamity cast quite a gloom on the proceedings. There was an off-day's racing on Friday, 26th, in which a ladies' bracelet was competed for, and won by Miss Argoon's Dingo ... J Carollo writes 2024. I am trying to identify a person called "E.A.Voumard" who placed an In Memoriam notice in the Adelaide "Advertiser" newspaper of 6 February, 1895 concerning the abovenamed. This notice was - "Inserted by his loving nurse". The notice contained information as to the cause of death in the hurdle race at Innamincka, and also a 6-line poem.
The full In Memoriam notice is as follows: HAMPTON - On the 25th January, Edward J. Hampton, aged 23, died from effects of an accident whilst riding in a hurdle race at Innamincka. It was his first and only ride in a race. Deeply lamented by many friends. The accident happened on the 27th at 3 p.m. and he died next day about the same time:
The trial was hard, I will not complain, I will trust in Christ to meet him again. He's gone from earth, yet not forgotten, Nor ever shall his memory be. Thoughts of him shall ever linger In my mind till I am dead. Inserted by his loving nurse, E.A. Voumard.
I am reasonably confident that this is "Ethelia (Ethel) Augusta Voumard nee Stavanson (and variations) who married Julius Voumard at the Registrar's office at Thargomindah in October 1891. Both parties named their usual residence as "Nappa Merrie", a station just over the SA border with Queensland and East of Innamincka
