BULL, James. J.P., N.Z. Sheep Farmer of "Makaraka" station, Hunterville, N.Z. Chairman Hunterviile Patriotic Soc; Vice-Press, Marton Jockey Club; Life Member, Rangitikei Racing Club; Hon. Life Member, Hunterville Returned Soldiers' Assoc.; Life Member, Manawatu and Wanganui A. & P. Assocs.; represented Rangitikei on Licensing Committee for eight years; Pres., Rangitikei Hunt Club, and Member for fifty years. Born : Bulls, N,Z., Aug. 13th, 1866. Son of James and Christina (nee Scott) Bull. James Bull arrived in N.Z. in 1856, subsequently banker and storekeeper and gave his name to the town of Bulls. Christina Scott was the daughter of Thomas Scott, one of the earliest pioneers of Rangitikei; arrived in N.Z. in 1837, subsequently of Scotts Ferry. Educated: Wanganui High School and Wellington College. Served five years with Rangitikei Cavalry as Lieutenant. Married: Esther McKelvie, daughter of John McKelvie of Edinburgh, Scotland, who journeyed to Aust. where he spent several successful years in contract work in connection with the gold diggings. In 1855 he arrived in the Rangitikel district, subsequently taking up the well known property "Flock House." Issue: Four sons; Lindsay, of "Romany," Silverhope, served in the Great War with the Wellington Manawatu Mounted Rifles as Lieutenant James Melville served with the Main Body of N.Z. Forces, killed on Gallipoli, Aug, 9th, 1915; Allan Russell served with N.Z. Forces during the Great War; Clarence Leighton, and two daughters, Gwendoline Grace (Mrs. W. B. Glasgow, of Waitara) and Christina Muriel (Mrs. Leslie Kellick of Mangamahu). Clubs: Wanganui ; Past-Press, now Committee Mem., Hunterville Club. Creed: Pres. Recreations: Has met with much success as racing owner; horses that have successfully carried his colours are: "Orlando," The Native," "Master Lupin," "Ngata," "Omaha," etc. Home address: "Makaraka" station, Hunterville, N.Z.
