General Notes:
The Inquirer and Commercial News (Perth, WA: 1855-1901) Friday 16 August 1895 A. WRITER OF BOYS' STORIES MB. GEO. MANVILLE FENN. Mr. Fenn is one of the most indefatigable of writers. Love stories, romances, and books for boys seem to flow from his pen without any weakening of power or invention. The rapidity with which he throws off books on Natural History, Tales for Boys, articles and Fiction for leading magazines, an occasional newspaper story, and volumes for the libraries, has long gone the admiration of his friends and the despair of the steady going reviewer, Mr. Fenn finds relaxation in his many literary occupations. He is a close student of the drama, a writer upon current topics for the daily press, and all he does shows that he is thoroughly up-to-date. His newspaper series are among the most successful published. GEORGE MANVILLE FENN. (picture) Mr Fenn's originality is the wonder and delight of his readers. Each new story seems better than its predecessor. They breathe a wholesome atmosphere of manly courage, heroic daring, patience, pluck and perseverance besides being full of information on all possible manner of subject. Mr. Fenn carries his readers along with him in that dashing style which forbids reflection until the close is reached. He, of all writers, is enjoyed, one knows not why, and cares not wherefore. Mr. Fenn was born in Pimlico, in 1830. Sharp in features, light of heart, cheery of speech, full of health and vigour Mr Fenn always seems like a man in a hurry. And yet withal, he is a most agreeable companion, possessed of heart full of kindness towards every thing that is good and noble. For a time he was a private tutor; then, he indulged in the production of a magazine and a newspaper. Charles Dickens accepted one of his early manuscripts for All the Year Round. He wrote a series of working life sketches for the Star in 1866. In 1870 he succeeded Mr. Hawes as editor of Cassell's Magazine, and in 1873 bought Once-a-Week from the late Mr. James Rice - Mr. Walter Bessant's partner. He has written one or more stories yearly since he entered upon his career as novelist, and is one of the most popular and widely read authors of the day.
George married Susanna LEAKE [25903] [MRIN: 9317] in 1855 in Lincolnshire.
