bullet  General Notes:

William was the only child of Daniel and Noa Baker who was born in Mangonui New Zealand.
It seems that at the age of about 14yrs William accompanied his brother to the Thames Goldfields. He was a carpenter by trade. He sat examinations and was one of the first to obtain his 1st Class Mine Manager Certificate in 1886 and two years later was appointed a Mine Manager. He held a number of Manager positions in several mines: Eureka, Cambria, Moanataiari, Mary Queen or Queen of the May. He was engaged as confidential expert to the Anglo-Continental and NZ Exploration Company. He was a long time Thames Country Councillor, member of the Hospital Board and on the Board of the Thames School of Mines.

In 1873 he married Ellen J. Woodcock. They had 7 sons and 4 daughters. [a number of their sons died soon after birth]
