At the age of 15yrs Henry was working in the Thames Goldfields. Henry married Georgina Holland [sister of Charles Baker's wife Susan Holland] in 1869 in Auckland New Zealand. There was one daughter of the marriage .

Sometime prior to 1912 he left Thames and his wife, changed his name from Baker to Baker Keningston and lived with Selina McQuillan. Together they had one son Henry Harold Egmont Kenningston.

Henry was a well known Bridge Builder in the Wanganui district. He married Selina 10 weeks before he died on 22 June 1935.
