George was from Nova Scotia Canada, in 1859 he received an appointment at Mangonui in the Native Department where he remained for over 22 years.
George has acted as clerk of the Court and licensing bench, registrar of births, deaths and marriages, meteorological observer, officer in charge of the Customs, superintendent inspector of native schools, native interpreter, and judge of Assessment Courts. He was Postmaster from 1878-1882 and Chairman of the Mangonui School Committee for a number of years.
In 1882 the family left Mangonui because George was transferred to Napier to take up a position [Native Interpreter work] and in 1893 was also appointed Native Land Purchase Officer. George Kelly had a keen interest in athletic sports, and was vice-president of the Caledonian Football Club and President of the Napier Sailing Club.
