John was reputed to be a strong handsome man who worked as a farm labourer in his youth and then went to sea around the coast of South East Australia, including a stint of whaling in Australia & NZ. He came ashore in Nov 1852 as harbour Master of Port Fairy and Warrnambool.
John married Mary Ann DANIELS [17640] [MRIN: 6365], daughter of John DANIELS [17689] and Unknown, on 27 Feb 1837 in St John Launceston. (Mary Ann DANIELS [17640] was born on 24 Aug 1819 in Launceston Tasmania and died on 28 Aug 1894 in Stawell Victoria Australia.)
