Edward was a student of the Merchant Taylors School then apprenticed as a chemist to his father in 1815. Finishing his apprenticeship he continued his education in surgery at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas's Hospital London, then in Edinburgh.
In 1820 Edward was admitted to membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. He practiced medicine at 41 Bishopsgate Street Within, in partnership with his father and Miles Beale. Miles and Edward had apprenticed together and studied together at Guy's. Miles married Edwards younger sister Dorothea.
Later as his family were born he moved to 24 Charterhouse Square, where he lived and practised for the next 39 years. He was a prominent London doctor with a large well-to-do practice. He was also active in the Merchant Taylors Company.
