Death of Registrar General (Extract)
A Magisterial Enquiry
At the inquest in Sydney yesterday on Mr. Alfred Parry Long, registrar-general, George Evans. a solicitor, residing at No 28 Castlereagh-street, deposed that the deceased was his brother-in-law Deceased was 50 years of age, and had left a widow and one child deceased left property valued at about £30,000. When speaking to his solicitor on Friday, Mr. Long was evidently depressed. He said that he had received certain injuries, and added: "If I am to be maimed for life I would sooner be dead." The clerks stated that Mr. Long had been worried by official matters, and had said that life was almost harder than he could bear. On Tuesday he went to his office and when a search was made two hours later he was found dead, with a bullet in his brain. The Coroner found that Alfred Parry Long died from a revolver bullet wound in his brain, the said injury having been self-inflicted.

THE LATE REGISTRAR-GENERAL.
Why did Mr. Parry Long commit suicide?
A relation said at the inquest "because he bad met with an accident"; his confidential clerk, " that he was overworked." The latest has it, however, that one of his brothers met a similarly melancholy death, though the statement may be mere idle rumour, and therefore " a jade." What is true, is that he had no reasonable cause for any such dreadful act, as he was a man in the prime of life, a man in a good position, and a rich man moreover, independent of his appointment altogether. It is stated that he had behind him the tidy fortune of L30,000, and that he owned the beautiful place he lived in, Roslyn Hall, at Darlinghurst. This splendid house, though it is not generally known, was built by Lieutenant Lawson, one of the three discoverers of a passage across the Blue Mountains in 1813, and was used by him as a city residence in the old days of "The System." It is a square stone edifice, baronial in character, and, until recently, stood in the midst of a magnificent estate. Here Mr. Long had lived for some little time, one of the nabobs of the most fashionable suburb of Sydney.
