1. Elizabeth Annie Alston: Alston House School.
Alston House Durban.
Alston House is easy to find, its just off the main route east into central Durban at 68 Ridge Road It is now a national monument, built in 1889 by Sir David Hunter, Gen Mgr of the Natal Govt Railways. Mrs Elizabeth Stack (nee Alston) bought the house in 1939 for 4000 pounds sterling. Up to her death in 1942, the house was used as a preparatory school and boarding house, tuition up to Standard 6 being offered by the 'Alston House Preparatory School'.
My mother (Kathleen Stack) used to tell stories about how they used to hold dances there on Sat nights for the young people, and how the lights of the house could be seen from miles around. The elders would play bridge in the next room! From here Granny produced plays, Dad sometimes playing opposite Mum . . . . . Mum was married from here - she used to talk about coming down the central stairway in her wedding frock! We have cine film of grandpa doing early morning exercises (all in white!) with the prep school boys on the playing field next door, now built on.
Granny died quite young, before I was born, to my mother's eternal sorrow. She caught rheumatic fever from damp sheets when they were away visiting friends. Her heart was weakened from being given digitalis for her asthma. She recovered from the fever but then suffered a heart attack and died. Mum missed her terribly, always talked about her with great affection all my life. She was apparently a mover and a shaker!
Memories of family life by Pam Mazoyer, nee Stack-Forsyth.
