Anne Hewitt tells that Ernest, but known as Herbert, left home at an early age and went to America where he roamed around the country. He was to go to the Yukon Gold but was not well enoughh when the party left, so they went without him. He got some work on a Fruit Farm in south-western Ontario with a family called Walton, where he fell in love with one of the daughters, Maude. She was 12 years younger than him and thought to be to young for him. He went back to England, but must have kept in touch with Maude and/or the family as when he heard that Maude was to visit her two sisters, in New York, where they were nursing sisters he returned to New York and propsoed to Maude and was accepted. Maude subsequently travelled to England and she and Ernest were married in Manningtree, Essex.

After Daisy was born the family went back to Grimsby, Ontario and had a fruit farm, where the other two children were born.
