Thomas was mentioned in his (Step) Grandmothers will 24-25 Jan 1625/6 as Thomas Alston of London, he appears to be also of Newton. (This detail from Cresswell is not confirmed by the extract of the Will)
The Alston pedigree in the MS Visitation of Suffolk 1561-1612, partly written by Sylvanus Morgan, calls him "le unthrift" and says that he was imprisoned in the Fleet and disinherited by his Grandfather, he attained his full age of 21 on the 28th March 1619 and therefore would have been born in 1598.

Bill dated 4 May 1626, by Thomas Alston, cousin and next heir of Thomas Alston, late of Newton, co. Suffolk, gent., deceased, and Dorothy his wife, likewise deceased ; viz. son and heir of Thomas Alston of Maplesteade, co. Essex, deceased, son and heir of the said Thomas of Newton, v. Joane Coo.
The said Thomas the grandfather, after the death of his said wife, was tenant by the courtesy of England of a moiety of the rectory and tithes of Maplestead, and of the manor of Munck's hall, being the inheritance of the said Dorothy. He was also seized of messuages, &c. called Groome's and Turrold's in Edwardstone:, co. Suffolk; the rectory and Priory of Edwardstone, and lands, &c. in Newton and Great and Little Waldingfelld, co. Suffolk,
Orator's father died, and before his grandfather's death, his said grandfather's sons. by his second wife, viz. Samuel, Isaac, Edmund, Abraham and Edmund, endeavoured to make their father settle his lands so as to disinherit Orator.
At his grandfather's death, Orator was only 17, and his affairs were managed by George Coe of Maplestead, gent. deceased.
Inquisition p.m. on Thomas the grandfather, taken 1 October 18 James I, quoted.
Orator came of age, Michaelmas 19 James I,
The suit is brought against George Coe's widow, to obtain redress for injury done to orator by said George's management of his affairs.

Bill dated 26 November 1632, by Thomas Alston of London, gent,, v. James Harrington and Joane Coe.
Thomas Alston of Newton, co. Suffolk, Esq. Orator's grandfather, and Dorathie, his wife, daughter and heir of - Omsteade of Withersfeild, co. Essex, gent., were seised of manor of Munckshall &c. &c., and bequeathed the same to your Orator.
The suit is brought with regard to mismanagement of estate, etc., during Orator's minority.

THE WILL OF THOMAS ALSTON OF NEWTON. Gent.
Dated 16 August 1634.
I devise to be buried according to the discretion of my executrix I give to my dear friend Sara Luxford of London widow all my lands, tenement s hereditaments with appurtances in Newton co. Suff. Little Oxley co. Essex belonging to me after the decease of my father Thomas Alston and grandfather Thomas Alston.
To Mr Tho. Elliott of Rivett co. Suff. gent L200 to be paid him by my executrix
To Mr George Garter 40/- for a mourning cloak and 20/- for a ring
To Mr John Clarke merchant taylor 20/- for a ring and to his wife 20/- to buy a muff.
To Richard Lindsay Esquire and to Robert Pickering gent 20/- each to buys rings
The residue of my goods to Sara Luxford widow whom I appoint sole executrix.
Overseers: Richard Lindsay and Robert Pickering
Signed Thomas Alston
