Robert came from a notable family of shipbuilders on the Wear.
In 1854 he broke away from his father's firm to set up a shipyard of his own, which was to become acclaimed in its own right and, which survived until the early 1930s

Robert married Sarah BARBARY [23871] [MRIN: 8567] on 9 Jun 1839 in Monkwearmouth DUR. (Sarah BARBARY [23871] died on 30 Apr 1866 in Southwick DUR.)
