Walter was educated at Rugby then trained as a Land Agent, enlisting with the Royal Fusiliers at the outbreak of WWI he served with conspicuous gallantry. He was the deserving recipient of the newly created Military Cross with 2 bars added for subsequent acts of bravery at the front. With fortune on his side Walter survived the war and resumed his Land Agents job on the Belvoir estate of the Duke of Rutland.
Walter married Mary Stella MIDDLEDITCH [22451] [MRIN: 8067] on 23 Apr 1923 in Duffield DBY. (Mary Stella MIDDLEDITCH [22451] was born in 1896 and died in 1962.)
